SUMMER NEWS LETTER  #12

AUGUST 21, 2009

August 5 Hi,

Even though Bob and I have been gone for a couple of years we still enjoy getting the newsletter. I just had my left knee replaced and am recovering at home. Had my second therapy session today....that's the tough part!

Thanks for doing the newsletter!

MONDAY, AUG.10th  Many people arrived at the casino. We had our meeting in a conference room. many hugs, kisses, and greetings. it is so good to see our Bentsen Grove family again. We had some new faces and we missed some of the ones that have come in the past. All information for the next three days was given out. Where we eat, where we play golf and where we eat!!!!!!!. We had beautiful weather all three days. Thursday was in the high eighties and high humidity. A shower felt real good after golf.  Some were lucky at the machines and some made the native Americans happy. I thought the lobster Wednesday night was very good. Of course at $ 12.99 for lobster tail it had to taste good. This was our eleventh year and again it went very smooth.

Thanks to Paul Kranz and Walt Kaizer for scheduling the golf teams. Thanks to everyone for coming. I'm looking forward to next year. See you all at B/G.

August 19 There are still people receiving this newsletter that will remember Haskell and Dorothy Casey who resided on 6th street for many years. Haskell passed away this week at the age of 99.  He and Dorothy moved from St. Louis to Bluffton, South Carolina, shortly after leaving the park so that they could continue to live near their daughter and her husband. Haskell was a dear friend to everyone who knew him and such a good Christian man. He will certainly be missed here on earth. Condolences can be sent to Dorothy at 24 Vespers Way, Bluffton, SC, 29910.

Wilma Mueller, A47. Corinee Higbee & Mary Gronlund had a farewell party for Don & Carla Badgley, August 9th. There were about 50 there. It's always bad to see our residents leave.

Wanda Green, F8 had surgery for a tumor on the brain Aug 10. She is recovering nicely & has been transferred to Mission Hospital for rehab. In case you haven't heard she has cancer. I'm sure a card would make her feel better. Marie Groat, A11 had thyroid surgery & is getting along OK. Don Hessling, W41, had a pace maker & is home & doing OK.

Pat & Bill Craig, W33 are taking  trip to Mich. as well as Bill & Dottie, F30. What does Mich. have anyway? Gen & Don Bobzien, W233 went to KS to see their little grandbaby, who had heart surgery, to see how she is. Ron & Betty Hamel, A16 are back from Austin. Their grandson Tanner just got back from Iraq.

Paul Huddleston announced in Church Sunday that he is getting married in January. Brenda's daughter, Tara also announced her engagement. We wish them much happiness.

Wathena Stock, W111, is recovering from her surgery & will be going back to the hospital for an infusion next week. This requires 24 hours in the hospital. She is scheduled for 3 of them. As I understand this is chemo put directly into her abdomen.

Gordon Ramey, formally of A8 has died. I think he had cancer.

Well, we finally had a cold front come to sunny TX. It was only 99 yesterday. Doesn't that make us feel good. We have set new records for 40 some days. Don't complain you guys up north, you could be here. I got a e-mail from Ed Wofford in OK. He had the nerve to tell me they had 6" of rain & it was 72.

Some of you may know Barbara Root ,F2, is leaving the park. She is going into a assisted living in Mich. Her husband Forrest did a lot of work for the park when Andy & Anita were here. We are never ready to give up our home, but sometimes it's necessary.

Seems strange to see school is about to start. We never went till after Labor day. That means it is almost time for you guys to think about packing for the south. Won't be long till activities will be starting.

You guys have a good summer!

Barb Goff A26  My friend, Marie Groat and I had a very nice experience while dining at the Olive Garden and I just wanted to pass on a true story of kindness.  We both had a coupon for so much off of two meals and only needed one.  So Marie went to the next table – a young couple who looked like newly weds had just sat down.  She gave them the extra coupon thinking that they would surely like to get a few bucks off of their meal, just we did.  They thanked her and we all went about our ordering, etc.  When we got ready to leave, the waitress told us that our tab was taken care of by that same young couple who had left just before  we asked for our bill.  Can you believe it! What an unexpected and nice surprise! That has renewed my faith in humanity.

A new Texas DPS law effective September 1st.is that : everyone in the vehicle, regardless of front or back seats and regardless of age,  must wear a seat belt. Also (and this is a biggy)  it is against the law to use a wireless communication device while in a school crossing zone unless the vehicle is stopped or the cell phone is used with a hands-free device or there is an emergency. There are several other new laws pertaining to teen age drivers. Thought that you would like to know this before starting your Texas travels.

Be careful out there!

And let’s hear from you!
