SUMMER NEWS LETTER #01

MARCH 20, 2009

Hi Family and Friends of Bentsen Grove Resort. The letters are starting to come in and that is the signal that we are about to start another summer season here in Mission, TX. I can see a slow trickle of RV’s and packed vehicles pulling out of the gate. Sad, but sweet also, because we can now look forward to the return of those RV’s and vehicles.

It has been a wonderful winter here. The park was just about full in mid season and we met many new friends. A Book Club and a Bird Watching Club were added to the activity list. We also enjoyed some good home cooked dinners every other Monday night with good old pancakes and French toast on the other Monday nights.

The golfers enjoyed the new putting green on the west side and the shuffle board courts were busy most of the time.

The BGR Float took first prize in the Annual Citrus Parade. It was an outstanding float complete with a helicopter and a Mash Unit. The men and women who put the floats together every year continue to amaze us with their ingenuity and crafty hands.

We will all look forward to hearing your news – good, bad or silly. Please save the jokes, “how tos” and editorials for your personal friends.

If you haven’t left yet and have pantry supplies that you won’t be using, don’t forget that the colonias would appreciate any and all donations of food and usable clothing and household goods. Just leave them in the box outside of the Activity Office.

Don’t forget to update your e-mail address if it changes. I’ve kept the old address book so I only need the changes.

Have a safe trip home and I wish you good health and happiness.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

From Roger Block W224 Connie,

My dear wife Connie passed away this evening at Mission Hospital. She had been failing for the last few weeks and passed away with congestive heart failure. I have been so blessed to have had her all these 61 years of our married life. She was a wonderful wife and mother. The funeral will be in Kalamazoo MI at Langeland Funeral Home. I don't know when or any of the details yet. She has been released of all her problems in this life. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Roger

From Duane and Mary Poole Formerly Lot 629, Ohio

Hello Friends,

We have been getting so many nice letters from you all. Thanks for keeping us up to date on what is going on with you. We miss you all so much.

We have had a very eventful winter - certainly not what we had planned for our first winter back in Ohio.

Soon after we arrived home from Texas I had my back surgery as planned. We stayed with our daughter in Reynoldsburg for a few days after surgery for a little extra help. I got along just fine after surgery - no post operative complications and I am still doing well.

We had so hoped we would be able to have Christmas at home once again since we had missed that while we were Winter Texans. The kids and our granddaughter were able to come down for Christmas. It was a lovely day. The kids enjoyed being home for Christmas as much as we enjoyed having them there.

After Christmas things started going downhill for Mary. Her neck surgery has been scheduled twice. And twice we have had to cancel her surgery.

First her platelets were way too high - over 900,000 - now they are down to a high normal range of 500,000. Her surgery had to be cancelled when the platelets were high.

She started having increasing trouble with congestive heart failure. Her doctor changed her medications and she ended up in the hospital with dehydration and electrolyte imbalances (critically low potassium and sodium).

When she got discharged from the hospital the doctor did not put her on any fluid pills so in a matter of 10 days she was back in the hospital with severe congestive heart failure and respiratory distress. She was in the hospital 8 days before they were able to get enough fluid off and feel safe enough to send her to Muskingum Valley Nursing and Rehab Center for 20 days of therapy and rehabilitation. (She was admitted to the rehab center on March 4th.)

Mary is doing well in rehab. Getting exercise everyday and getting stronger everyday.

I feel comfortable having her at the rehab center. It is just two blocks away from home so I can run over several times a day. Also, I know she is getting the care she needs there.

This has been the coldest winter Beverly has had in many years. Our Ohio friends are all ready to send us back to Texas - they say we caused all this cold weather. Ha-ha-ha.

Stay well friends, and keep in touch.

Duane
