SUMMER NEWSLETTER 05
From Donna Heisterberg #311- MO-- Hello to our Bentsen Grove family!
After we arrived home from TX. I, of course had the usual round of Dr. appts. Saw the new family Dr. He treated me for the pneumonia I got as a complication of the upper respiratory crud. I had it for a total of 2 months. 3 rounds of antibiotics, steroids and steroid inhaler. He thought that the x-ray showed an aneurysm on my aorta, so sent me to the Cardiologist, more tests, no aneurysm! Praise the Lord and all the prayers that were offered up for me. Then it was the 6 mo visit with the Oncologist. Tests were normal and he could not feel any enlarged lymph nodes. Good news, since I always dread those visits! I am sooo sorry to hear that Jackie has to have more treatment. I will be sending her a card and praying big time for remission again! After the Oncologist, I saw the Orthopedic surgeon for my last follow up appt on my L rotator cuff surgery last May. He said I will never get to 100% usage but I have about 85% and that is good since he had to remove so much bone and damaged ligaments & muscle.
Now I am madly getting ready for the 10th international red hat society convention in Orlando at the Gaylord.
Arlie just celebrated his 69th birthday with our 20 yr old grandson born on his grandpa and great grandpas birthday. That is always a great day for our family. Arlie is also busy mowing all 3 properties that we own, he just gets through and it is time to start all over again. HA! I think that is why he loves BG so much! Not one blade of grass. LOL.
We miss everyone and can't wait for December!
Hug each other for me! PS Nan! How is my golf cart, you haven't been drag racing, have you?

From Peggy and Gordon Philbrook Lot 707. Imagine being on a private island with 10,000 acres of primitive Maritime Forest, a 7 mile shell-filled beach, Tidal Creeks, a limit of 30 guests and 20 staff to wait on you. Three gourmet meals a day prepared and served at the main lodge, fresh cookies every day, open bar all day, beer and soft drinks available in the lodge, in our cabin, on the beach, and in the trucks that took us on guided field trips each morning and/or afternoon. We were lucky to share this for three days with our whole family for our daughter's 50th birthday. Our 2,000 sq ft cabin had a Great Room with fireplace, 4 bedrooms with private bath, king sized beds and a leather chair and otto and looked out on a screened in porch that ran around three sides. The grandchildren (29 & 31 yrs old) stayed in a smaller cabin next door. There was a huge swimming pool and swings placed here and there all over the island. We saw 'gators, raccoon, armadillo, bald eagles and zillions of both water and regular birds. This is Little Saint Simons Island off the Georgia cost and is just wonderful! No TV, no newspapers, telephones or radios - just family and wonderful rest and fun. It was a trip of a life-time. We're home now and playing catch-up but what fun!
Lolita at W220 and Ken & Nancy went to Indy to see great grand daughters grad, My my how she has grown and now moving in with boy friend.
We had a great trip and the weather was great too. See ya all when we get back
Nancy
We attended the commissioning ceremony at Lawrence KS last weekend. Our oldest grandson is now an Ensign in the US.S. Navy. He has been in the Navy for 6 years, and will now go to FL for pilot training. There were 35 young men commissioned and it was a wonderful ceremony. We have two grandsons in the Navy now, and watch the world news very intently.
Iowa is finally warm! Everyone said we went home to soon, and they were right! Here's to a good summer for all.
From Barb Goff A26 Thursday, May 29 is a day to remember for all of the Card Bingo players in the park. Everyone playing won at least one game! That has never happened as long as anyone who has played, can remember. We play twice a week and have a lot of fun. If you're still here in the park, come on out on a Monday or Thursday night and make your fortune. Sure beats the TV programming!
From Duane Stephens W212 Illinois Jean Clark ( W213 ) and I took the Road trek and left for Lynchburg, Va. May 14 to help her son Ken unpack after a move. We drove in and out of rain but with a good tailwind, got there Friday. Helped unpack and clean, toured the countryside and left Wednesday the 21st. Stopped in Beverly, Ohio to visit Duane and Mary Pool ( 629 ) and Willard and Jean Needs ( formerly 636 ). Lots of good food , dominoes and Sequence. Even toured the marble factory in Marietta. Left Pools the 22nd and headed to Pat and Alice Mae Pattons ( formerly W040 ) near Raub, Indiana. Alice Mae is in a rehab facility in West Lafayette temporarily, has difficulty walking, should be home this week. Toured a wind farm nearby where the Pattons have a couple of the big wind generators. Really impressive up close, the towers stand 240 feet tall and the blades are 120 feet long.
Left for home May 26th, got home safe and sound after 1800 miles. Sadly, heard Duane's Mother passed away after we left, she was near 100 years old
Doris & Roger Stansberry (F 32) Doris, her mother Helen Pearson(W216) and myself are in Branson MO at the present time. While here we have visited with Bob & Lorraine Howard ( former BG at B1). They are both doing fine. We also visited with Merle & Sue Leners (512) who are working Kemberling City Park for the summer. They both are fine.
Doris and I want to remind you to bring back coats and jackets for Tim's Coat drive. We had collected about 550 coats before we left BG.
We would also like to thank Barb Goff (A26) for doing the newsletter. Doris & Roger
From Barb Goff A26 I'm so sorry to let you know that we have lost a couple of very dear friends from our park. Harold Doddeck, C11, passed away at his home in IL on May 24. I believe you can send condolences to t his wife, Lil, at:
3 Hilltop Dr, Decatur, IL. 62521.
On June 1st we also lost Irma Haught, F20 after a short illness. Irma and her husband, Al, were full time residents on F 20 (and mail may be sent to that address.)I've been told that the family plans on having a Memorial for Irma in the late fall. We'll dearly miss these two and our hearts and prayers go out to the families.
From Wilma Mueller, A47. This has to be the hardest article I have ever written. Jackie Huddleston, 61, passed away on Monday, June 2. at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. She had gone to her doctor on Wednesday to decide if she wanted to take any more chemo. When Paul got her there she wasn't responding to him very well. When they got her inside the doctor immediately called an ambulance to take her to the hospital. On Wednesday they put her in ICU & on a ventilator & started treating the infection in her blood. Her blood count went up some, but the chemo still in her body just destroyed the good cells, so they did more blood & platelets. The doctors seem to think the infection had been dormant in her intestines for a while & when her immune system went so low it just went all through her body. She also had trouble with her circulation & the fingers of her right hand were turning black. The doctors were thinking of amputation, but Paul & the boys didn't want that done. So on Monday the family decided to take the ventilator off & let her go peaceful & she did.
I've known Jackie for 25 years & been really good friends for most of that. We've done a lot together & been through a lot together (including cancer) & I will miss her smile & funny ways. We talked about death several times & she certainly wasn't afraid of dying. As Paul said "she didn't even stop at the first cloud" Jackie my friend, you will be missed. Condolences may be sent to Paul and family at:
713 East 11TH, Mission, TX 78572
I'm sure most of you have heard about Irma Haught, F20, who passed away on Sunday
Cliff & Lori Galster, W170 just got back from a trip to Alaska. Guess they had a wonderful time. Betty & Ron Hamel, A16, are up north visiting the children.
We are still playing cards, we still have about 3 tables most of the time. Won't be long till it will be maybe one. Get back soon card players.
The days are hot, but it is really nice first thing in the morning. We get to set out in the evenings, there is almost always a breeze. Don't see a lot of people going by. Where is everyone? Card bingo still draws a lot of people. They still have the Tuesday morning meetings with coffee & donuts.
