SUMMER NEWS LETTER #15

SENT OCTOBER 1. 2007

From Barb Goff (A26): Hi. Can you believe that summer is over and that all of our good Winter Friends will be arriving soon. Where did the time go?. I spoke with Hope a week ago and she will be sending us a letter letting us know what's happening in her life. (She sounded good and seems to be doing good.) That makes us all feel good. (GOOD is the word of the day!) For all of you heading down soon, be safe. Looking forward to seeing you. I'll be gone from Oct 2 to Oct 11, but keep the news coming.

From Betty and Dean DeVore :I am so glad to hear Don and Carla are putting in an elevator to their pool...I was getting so tired and it was very hard squeezing thru that little window in their foundation to get to that pool...They didn't say but I really hope they also added some sort of ventilation in the pool area too...on very hot days the heat and smell of so many old bodies in that pool was somewhat overtaking at times...But I really mustn't complains as they were such gracious host and never turned one soul away who could make it thru that tiny window to the pool...always

grateful...Betty and Dean DeVore

From Dan Mathias (W77): Summer may be getting near the end, but here is some information from Hattie Taylor D34 and Dan MathiasW77. We both spend our summers at Marshfield, WI. Our sister is Bea Edens who used to live on Elizabeth ST. near the indoor poll. Bea moved to Sun City, AR. seven years ago to be near her son, they decided to move to Leesburg, Fl two years ago. She emailed me this morning, Sept l9, that Hub Gagnon had died today. He and Virginia had lived in the Park for many years, moving from the Park to Florida and back to the Park, finally remaining in FL. No other details were available at this time. Hattie and I went to San Clemete, Ca to visit our brother and wife, he is 99 years old and is wife is (we do not tell people women's ages) but she is nearly as old. They live just a stone's throw from the Nixen estate. Their home sets in the middle of a golf course They were both avid golfers. He has made a hole in one on two separate occasions. He is not able to golf any more as he now has macular degeneration. Hattie and I are fine and looking forward to returning to our winter home

From John Abbott(A 6):Remember to pack your passport today even if your travels keep you in North America. The temporary reprieve for travelers to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean expires today.

The last time this was enforced it led to a big backlog in passport applications. The reinstated passport rule applies to people flying to and from Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. At San Francisco International Airport it is difficult to say whether they stricter passport rules will cause many problems.

Travelers had been warned since the policy took affect back in January. This summer the government temporarily waved the new passport rule because it was simply taking too long for new applicants to get one. Travelers had to show proof that they had applied for a passport at that time. The state department issued 18 million passports within this last fiscal year -- about 12 million in 2006

"During the summer, when we had a backlog of passport applications, we allowed people to enter and leave with proof that they had applied for their passport. Now it is only taking six weeks to get a passport. Everyone will be required on Monday to have a passport to enter or leave the United States by air," said David Donahue, State Dept. Consular Affairs OFC.

If you think you can avoid getting a passport by avoiding air travel keep in mind that beginning in January 2008 those traveling by car or sea from those same countries will also have to show a passport to enter the United States -- that or a new passport card which is still being developed.

For those who left the country before today's rule takes affect they will be allowed to come back into the United States using their previous documentation.

From Carolyn Abbott (A6): NOTES FROM THE PARK MEETING - SEPT. 18,2007:Brenda announced that they have been researching for the folks on park electricity. You all have been paying 18 cents per kilowatt-hour and now you WILL only pay 16 cents.

One of our residents received a phone call asking about her bank account and wanted to know her account number so she could straighten it out. Brenda advised to all to NEVER give out any personal information on the phone.

The fruit and pecan trees on your property are yours. Someone has been going around in the late evening picking fruit and nuts from others property.

Starting this Thursday and Friday, they will be opening the gates during the day. Halloween is the only exception. They will be closed all day, then.

The post- master came out and said he was going to remove our mail drop box, saying that it was not available to the public. Brenda argued and argued with him. Finally, he said that if she painted it a different color within 24 hours, she could keep it. Then, she asked if the post office would continue to remove our mail from the box. He assured her and she double checked with the postal carrier who delivers our mail. Your mail will be picked up and mailed by the post office. BTW, as of November 1, this post-master will be replaced. At that announcement, the place cheered and clapped.

Brenda then named names of all of the volunteers. She said that she really appreciated these people. She asked the library assistants to stand and be recognized, too. Ron came forward to thank the people who had helped him, saying that he bought some new signs, too. He said that there are still people who walk their dogs and do not pick up after them. By November 1, Ron will have a dog run on the west side. He still is not sure where, but it will be installed.

If you wish to address anything to the office, please use F-43 on all your mail.

The bulletin boards from the main hall have been removed. Church, bridge and rock club notices are now on the bulletin boards on the kitchen side.

Bonnie is trying to get a Pepsi machine. It will sit next to the Coke machine. She said that she hopes to always have at least one new performer each year. The shows will be $3 per show with one being $5.
