Barron’s Bytes

I Hope I Haven’t Missed You

I know spring is in the air and many of our members will be going north soon. In fact some of you may already have made the northward trip. So if I’ve missed the chance to say goodbye in person, I’m sorry. The good news is that if you haven’t departed yet, I’ll be seeing you next Monday (March 22). After some complications my nephrologists, my internist, my cardiologist, and finally my surgeon have finally released me.

Browsers

You may remember that the last time I wrote I was planning to download and use the FIREFOX Internet Browser. For various reasons I have not done that here in Houston but I am expecting to do that soon after getting back home. If you have been thinking of trying it out you might enjoy reading a good Houston Chronicle review at:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/printstory.mpl/tech/weekly/2447483

The Houston now requests you to register to access articles but registration is free.

Faster Surfing

For those of us who are unable to get a high speed DSL line the quest for greater surfing speed has until recently seemed elusive. But over the next few weeks I will show you how to double your surfing speed, which is very much worthwhile. This will be for ISP customers, not for Online Service users. I believe AOL is now offering an Internet Acceleration Service (IAS) to its customers for an additional monthly fee.

CD-R Recording

Before leaving the Valley in February, I carefully backed up the MY DOCUMENTS folder from my computer onto a CD. When I got to Houston, I found that the CD contained the MY DOCUMENTS folder but it was empty. Where did the files go that were supposed to be in the folder? Well I still don’t exactly know, but I sure know how to keep it from happening again. So as a result of my goof, I will soon be discussing CD-R RECORDING SESSIONS.

Happy computing,

Val Barron
