Home Again

It was exciting for me to be back at Bentsen Grove and attending the Computer Club meeting this past Monday (Jan. 19). I always miss the meetings when I have to be away. I look forward to being with all of you for the next two weeks.

Tutorials

This week I am trying something new in the text version of the tutorial. I am including captions from illustrations that appear in the PDF version but which cannot be included in the text only version. The captions appear in a distinctive format like this…..{ Illustration caption in original---Right-click a drive icon in My Computer and choose Properties for information on the file system.}

In the text version this week I put the captions close to where the illustrations appear in the PDF version. Next week I think I’ll just put all of the captions together at the end of the article.

Virtual Magnifying Glass

At the last meeting we download, installed, and experimented with a small program called Virtual Magnifying Glass. If you want to try it out you can download Version 2.00 at:

http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/

If you find an actual use for it please e-mail me or mention it at a club meeting.

Beagle/Bagel Virus Alert

W32.Beagle.A@mm, a worm virus that spreads by e-mail, is aggressively spreading and attacking Windows users. The virus arrives in a message with a subject line that says "Hi" and an attachment with a randomly generated name. Running the attachment will cause the virus to send itself out to all e-mail addresses found on the system. The virus also opens port 6777, which could allow an attacker to remotely access the system. More information on prevention, detection and removal can be found at:

www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.beagle.a@mm.html

Phobias

The Houston Chronicle has an interesting list of web sites relating to phobias at:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/tech/weekly/2361420 .

Happy Computing

valbarron@att.net

Going along with Val’s Tutorial for this week is a small free program that may be downloaded from:

http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html .

Disk Investigator will reveal what is hidden on your hard drive. It directly displays the true drive content.
