Barron’s Bytes

By Val Barron

Quiet Time At Bentsen Grove

The park has just about slimmed down to its summer strength with just a few occupied houses per street. The weather has been mixed with sun and clouds most of the time. Temperatures have ranged from the mid eighties to the mid nineties with the humidity running below 50 percent. One evening a couple of weeks ago there was a serious wind and rainstorm. There was little damage in the park; most of the damage was across the river in downtown Reynosa.

Thanks To Those Who Serve

When we tried to express appreciation for those who help with our computer club I forgot to add an item to Harold Buechly’s resume.  Harold has served as our club treasurer since the first dues were collected. These dues have provided us with a high quality professional projection screen and a fast new computer. Of course thanks go to each of you members for your financial support of our club and to Harold for the big job of keeping track of our members and the dues money.

Alternative to eCleaner

Club member Richard Fait has suggested StripitMail as an alternative to eCleaner for cleaning all those >>>>>> things on your e-mail forwards. StripitMail V 0.99h is available from

http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/comm/fwmiscmail.shtml

Dave Watkins who usually visits the park for a couple of weeks at Christmas has suggested Stripper whose formal name is Mr. Ed’s Simple E-Mail Bracket (>) & Message Board Reply Indentation (:) Stripper v3.0 is available at

http://www.geocities.com/cj1alt/stripper.html

I have not used either of these but Richard and Dave are happy with them.

E-Mail etiquette

If you enjoy sharing your e-mail jokes and inspirationals you should clean them up, copy them into a new letter then mail them to yourself with the intended recipients as BCC’s (Blind Courtesy Copies). Don’t forget that the first rule of sharing this type of e-mail is: Never send them to anyone who has not expressed a desire to receive them. We all think that if we get a good laugh from a message or enjoy an inspirational message that our friends will enjoy it too. This may very well be the case but they may just consider these messages as SPAM and delete them without reading them.

Pop-under Ads

While typing this column on April 29 with my pop-up stopper set to medium the following pop-under was found on my desktop. Some of the card players among you might find this interesting: GreatUSAflags.com

Windows XP Service Configuration

Club member Claude Westfall has uncovered some very useful information about “Windows XP services” for XP users at BlackViper.com. This allows all sorts of network related & other services to be disabled that you do not need. Keep them from loading, & you'll save RAM & boost system performance.

If you don’t know what this, study it carefully but don’t do anything you don’t understand. Services are accessed by selecting Start, Run & type in “services.msc” without the quotes, & press Enter.

Happy Birthday

Ten years ago in April a child was born. Computing would not be what it is today without this child and his relatives. I think you will enjoy visiting a couple of sites for some information on this event.

Q. My browser is supposed to be Java enabled but I can not get any Java applets to work so far. Any suggestion?

A. To get Java working in Outlook Express, first download the latest. Start at BGRCC.com http://www.bgrcc.com/ (Where else would one start from?), click on TOP DOWNLOADS, download and install the latest and greatest Java.

To make sure Java is enabled go to Internet Explorer, click on tools, click on internet options, click on advanced, scroll down to Java, make sure Java is checked. Go to Microsoft VM make sure all 3 boxes are checked.

Microsoft has been issued a court order to support Java after fighting it for a year or more. I understand that it is now a part of the latest service pack to upgrade XP.
