Barron’s Bytes

By Val Barron

Is Spring Coming To The Valley?

You don’t have to look outside and check the weather to know that spring is indeed coming to Bentsen Grove. We can tell by the fact that a few of our club members are beginning to leave for “up north”. George Kelly reports that “up north” in Dowagiac, MI it’s running about 20 degrees at night and 40 degrees during the day. But I know those of you who have dual-citizenship (i.e. Here and Up North), will start to get antsy and want to go to your other home. As you get ready to leave I want you to know that we will miss all of you during the summer. But, for as long as most of you are still here, we will keep plugging away at our Monday morning get together. At the end of Barron’s Bytes under the heading of Old Business you will find a list of some of the web sites we visited during the second hour of last Mondays meeting.

Hoax of the Week: Don’t Use Cell Phones at the Gas Pump

This chain letter hoax has been reborn recently and is once again clogging up our e-mail. This dates from at least mid 1999 but has been seen several times recently. I guess with the beginning of spring we also begin what I call the “e-mail silly season”. When you have received a chain letter and are considering forwarding it, please research it at one of the many hoax sites that we have discussed in the past. A good resource is con John Abbott’s page on the club web site at http://my.awesomenet.net/~bentsen/a%20scam%20funny.htm. Or you can simply do a Google search by putting some pertinent information like the title of this paragraph, “Don’t Use Cell Phones at the Gas Pump” into the Google search window. Besides chain letters were seeing other types of hoaxes, scams, and virus hoaxes.

Computer Viruses: Real ones not hoaxes

In the last couple of weeks I have been receiving increasing numbers of virus notifications from AT&T WorldNet, my ISP who (bless them) are filtering them out and not even giving my Norton Anti-Virus a chance to whack them. But, this is a serious reminder for you to update your VIRUS DEFINITIONS at least bi-weekly if your anti-virus program doesn’t do that for you automatically.

AOL News: (Who said I couldn’t be nice to AOL)

AOL, (bless them too) has begun today (Wednesday, 03-12-03) downloading pop-up controls for their AOL 8.0 subscribers. They will download to 10% of their subscribers each day until completed. If you can’t wait and/or for other details, go to:

http://rss.com.com/2100-1024-992142.html or

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/12/technology/12AOL.html?th

And to think that all along I thought you AOLers loved those ads.

By the way, the New York Times folks MIGHT ask you to register but it doesn’t cost anything. I’ve been registered with them since before the printing press, so I can’t remember if they will want you to or not.

Shortcut of the Week: Which was recently shown at a meeting, but without much comment.

WINDOWS R – That is, press and hold the WINDOWS key (the flag looking thingies) then tap the R key. This will bring up the RUN dialog box, which many of us use for MSCONFIG if nothing else.

Old Business: Web sites mentioned at recent meetings

In no particular order and with few if any comments.

For All Computer users By Corinne Higbee

It has been suggested that we try and find some other places to eat as so many groups use Mr.Gattis.  If you have any suggestions we would appreciate you leaving a note with us on Monday, at the meeting, for places we might go next year.  If you would like to rotate to different places, instead of the same one each month, we can do that also. All suggestions will be appreciated.

There will be drawings for the free tickets to Mr. Gattis, between the beginners and advanced sessions.

Please bring your favorite sites to visit to share with others. We will publish them in the BGRCC bulletin. Go to the home page when you are on the internet and re read the old lessons and bulletins. They have a wealth of information stored there. The site is www.bgrcc.com  and is a well laid out web page by our club member Harold Buechly. The previous bulletins have the web sites shared by members listed for all to see and use.
