A View From The Stool By Val Barron

Transferring dial-up information between computers - Element K Journals

When you first buy a new computer, you can spend hours customizing it exactly as you had your previous computer and transferring all pertinent information and settings from your old system to your new one. Entering all your Dial-Up Networking settings for your Internet connection takes a while, and repeating the same information on your new system is a waste of time. If you regularly use more than one computer to connect to the Internet, you don't have to enter all the information twice. You can transfer the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) settings stored in your Dial-Up Networking folder to another computer.
First, open the Dial-Up Networking folder by clicking the Start button and then choosing Programs | Accessories | Communications | Dial-Up Networking. Then, drag the icon for the setting you wish to transfer to a floppy disk, or, if your computers are networked, drop it onto the other computer's desktop.  Then, you'll need to re-enter your user name and password information on the other computer. You can ensure that this works correctly by enabling the settings for user name and password. Open the Dial-Up Networking dialog box once again, and then choose Connections | Settings, and then select the Prompt For Information Before Dialing checkbox. Second, you'll need to select the other computer's modem for the connection by right-clicking the connection, selecting Properties, and then selecting the modem from the Connect Using dropdown menu. That's all there is to it!

MSCONFIG

With Windows, Microsoft includes a very useful utility called the “Microsoft System Configuration Utility”. In a future meeting we will explore some of the many ways to use this program. If you are not familiar with MSCONFIG there is an introduction to it at: http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ .

Conquer Hard Drive Hassles-Continued

In the January 27 Bulletin I mentioned a free utility from Western Digital to test hard drives. One of our members said that it didn’t seem to work with Windows XP. I have finally been able to try it on a Windows XP machine myself and it didn’t work for me either. After booting with the floppy that you create, this XP computer hangs requiring the removal of the floppy and a push on the reset or power off button. Since it is advertised to work with XP, I’ll try to find out what the problem is and report further.

Last week’s program (2/24/2003) by Ron Bormann, The Computer Doctor (956)451-1389.

Ron’s demonstration reviewed several programs that may be used to make our computer experiences more rewarding. If your computer is not working hard to download advertising while you are on line, it will work much faster on what we want to view. All too often, a part of our computer is taken over by an outside computer. This includes our processor, hard drive, memory and internet connection.

The following programs are free to download and free to use by non-commercial users (for home use)

SpyBot available from http://www.safer-networking.org click on download, click on download here follow instructions and install it. SpyBot - Search & Destroy searches your hard disk for different kinds of internet threats – including spy and adware, keyloggers and your usage tracks (for example your browsers page history). Spybot-S&D can also fix some system problems.

Lavasoft Add Aware 6 available from http://lavasoft.element5.com . Under support click on download, select a site to download from, (Download.com etc.), click download now, follow instructions and install it. Add Aware 6 will scan your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known Datamining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, Keyloggers, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components.

Zone Alarm available from www.zonelabs.com . Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on free download. Follow instructions and install it. ZoneAlarm. Do not click on “Zone Alarm PRO” or “Zone Alarm PRO 30 day free trial” unless you want to pay for it, It's free for personal and non-profit use (excluding government and educational entities). ZoneAlarm is compatible with Microsoft® Windows® 98/Me/NT/2000 and XP.

Kill Popup 1.2 Available from http://download.com.com/3000-2381-7903554.html?tag=pop . Kill Popup is a very simple (and small ~44Kb) program that is very effective at doing what its name says, sometimes it might be a little too effective. Sometimes the program won't let you click on links that open up a new browser window. So if you click on a link and it doesn't seem to work, hold [Ctrl] and click on the link again.

Ron also emphases how important it is to keep your anti-virus programs up to date.

If you would like to review download procedures you may take a look at http://my.awesomenet.net/~bentsen/010212w.htm which takes you to our bulletin of Feb. 12, 2001.

A note from John Abbott

Here's an Addendum to the embedding of large URL's in e-mail.  Since a large number of folks don't have Word, and compose in AOL or Outlook, it is useful to know that one can create a short link at http://makeashorterlink.com where

http://harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu/b01/en/home/index.jhtml

;jsessionid=RDQTXPQGXXOQACTEQENR5VQKMSARUIPS?_requestid=13287.

becomes http://makeashorterlink.com/?I40422B83  which is pretty easy to handle too :O)

Another note that I need to make is that I accepted a call to be the pastor of a church on a full time basis today. I will be starting in a week and although I will still be around about as much, I may be a lot slower getting to computer problems. I don't want to discourage anyone from calling me, but they need to know that I may not always be in control of my time as I am now.
